Rural Water Management

DNR library: Junction of the Murray and the Darling Rivers at Wentworth NSW

The vision for management of natural resources in New South Wales seeks to ensure clean, healthy and productive catchments.

To achieve this vision, it is essential that agriculture and other natural resource-based industries are developed in a way and that enables sustainable production while maintaining or enhancing the condition of our land and water resources.

Managing water for consumptive use is a responsibility of the New South Wales Government.

Surface and Groundwater management

The Department has developed a series of publications that explain how surface and groundwater resources are managed, how water is shared between consumptive users and the environment, and how allocations for licensed water users will be determined, approved and announced. New publications are added from time to time.

Water quality

Water quality is a measure of catchment health. The level of salinity and presence or absence of algae, for example, affect water use. The department publishes Algal Alerts and Water Quality Reports from time to time.
