Coastal and Floodplain Management
An introduction to coastal and floodplain management
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) works closely with local councils and communities to reduce threats from flooding and coastal storms and to ensure that people in NSW are able to enjoy our natural coastal and estuary environments.
To achieve this DNR supports local government through a range of programs:
- the Coastal Management Program
- the Estuary Management Program
- the Floodplain Management Program providing assistance to councils in coastal areas and urban centres in western NSW
DNR is also the State agency responsible for rural floodplain management in Western NSW within floodplains designated under Part 8 of the Water Act, 1912.
Coastal and floodplain management grants
The Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, the Hon Carmel Tebbutt MP, announced the 2008/2009 estuary, coastal and floodplain management grants on 5 November 2008. A total of $17.7 million in grant offers for 374 projects was announced. The Minister will send a formal letter of offer to each successful council.
