Media Release - Department of Water and Energy

Date: 1 July 2008

WATER AVAILABILITY IN THE BORDER RIVERS

The Department of Water and Energy today announced Available Water Determinations for various water sources across the state for the start of the 2008-2009 water year.

In the Border Rivers, there is sufficient water to meet 100 per cent allocation of town water supply, stock and domestic and high security needs, following heavy rains over the catchment and localised flooding earlier in the year.

There is sufficient water reserved to meet the critical human needs, which means access will be allowed to remaining general security carryover, subject to any State Water delivery requirements.

The current storage capacity at Pindari Dam is about 98,200 megalitres, an increase of 23,800 megalitres from the commencement of the last water year.

There is sufficient storage to secure current water held in accounts for Border River water users and inflows will be shared as new resources become available.

It is important that water users are aware of the situation in order to plan their operations over the coming year.

Rainfall patterns over the summer months have provided Border Rivers’ farmers with some relief by replenishing soil moisture and lessening the need for irrigation water.

Broken Hill’s town water supply is secure for the immediate future, and there are no restrictions current on the diversion of off-allocation flows.

Industry groups, irrigators and the townships of Boggabilla and Mungindi will benefit from these allocations for the new water year.

The Department of Water and Energy will continue to monitor the situation closely and review allocations as new resources become available.

Additional information is available on the Department’s website www.dwe.nsw.gov.au. Alternatively; licence holders can phone their local DWE office for more information.
