Media Release - Department of Water and Energy

Date: 1 July 2008

WATER ALLOCATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR THE GWYDIR VALLEY

The Department of Water and Energy today announced Available Water Determinations for surface water users in the Gwydir Valley for the commencement of the 2008-2009 water year.

Allocations for town water supply, stock and domestic will be 100 per cent and high security water users will receive 1 megalitre per share unit following excellent rainfalls over the catchment area during the summer months.

There is also sufficient storage to secure current water held in accounts for Gwydir River water users and inflows will be shared as new resources become available.

The current storage capacity at Copeton Dam is about 298,400 megalitres - an increase of 152,100 megalitres from the commencement of the last water year.

Rainfall patterns over the summer months have also provided Gwydir farmers with some relief by replenishing soil moisture and lessening the need for irrigation water.

The allocations announced will enable water users to plan their operations over the coming year.

Broken Hill’s town water supply has also been secured for the immediate future, and there are no restrictions current on the diversion of supplementary flows.

Industry groups, irrigators and the townships of Delungra, Bingara, Moree and Collarenebri will benefit from these allocations for the new water year.

The Department of Water and Energy will continue to monitor the situation closely and review allocations as new resources become available.

Additional information is available on the Department’s website at www.dwe.nsw.gov.au. Alternatively, licence holders can phone their local DWE office for more information.
