Media Release - Department of Water and Energy

Date: 1 July 2008

COMMENCING WATER ALLOCATIONS FOR MACQUARIE AND CUDGEGONG WATER USERS

The Department of Water and Energy today announced Available Water Determinations for the Macquarie and Cudgegong Regulated Rivers for the start of the 2008-2009 water year.

Despite recent rainfall over the catchment area, the available water in the Central West storages remains low with Burrendong Dam currently holding approximately 236,900 megalitres.

Town water supply and stock and domestic water users will receive 100 per cent of entitlement and high security water users will receive 1 megalitre per share unit.

The current storage levels will not allow for a general security water allocation for Macquarie River users, although full carry over will be available.

Towns in the Central West of the State have managed well and have imposed town water restrictions which have helped to maintain available water throughout the year.

Currently Windamere Dam is holding about 89,300 megalitres. There is sufficient water available to provide 100 per cent of entitlement for town water supply and stock and domestic licence holders and high security water users will receive 1 megalitre per share unit.

The general security water users on the Cudgegong River will have access to all unused water carried over from last season.

Due to the ongoing drought conditions, with minimal inflows, the normal water sharing rules in the Macquarie and Cudgegong Regulated River Water Sharing Plan remain suspended.

The Department of Water and Energy will monitor the situation closely and continue discussions with the critical water planning group to review allocations as new resources become available.

Additional information is available on the Department’s website at www.dwe.nsw.gov.au. Alternatively, licence holders can phone their local DWE office for more information.
