Media Release - Department of Water and Energy Date: 17 March 2009 WATER ALLOCATION INCREASE FOR MACQUARIE-CUDGEGONG
General security licence holders along the Macquarie-Cudgegong Rivers can now access up to 10 per cent of their licensed water entitlement, the NSW Department of Water and Energy announced today.
Today’s allocation is a slight increase on the previous general security water allocation of nine per cent and is the result of recent heavy rainfall.
“Localised storms generated good flows into the lower Bogan River and part of the lower Macquarie River,” said the Department’s Water Management and Implementation Director, Peter Christmas.
“This has enabled us to provide enough water to meet stock and domestic needs and make more water available to region’s general security irrigators.
“Although the irrigation season is drawing to a close, this extra water will be welcomed and can be carried over for use in the next water year.”
Mr Christmas said that the recent rainfall would also benefit the local environment.
“A further 1,600 megalitres of water will be credited to the Environmental Water Account held in Burrendong Dam,” he said.
“This water will be released when conditions are right to deliver the most benefit to downstream riverine and wetland environments.”
The water allocation for town water supply and stock and domestic licence holders remains at 100 per cent of their licensed water entitlement, while high security licence holders have an allocation of one megalitre per unit share.
The Macquarie-Cudgegong Water Sharing Plan remains suspended.
The Department of Water and Energy will continue to monitor water availability closely and review allocations as new resources become available.
Further information on water availability in the State’s major river valleys is available on the Department’s website at www.dwe.nsw.gov.au.
