RED ALERT HUME DAM

Chairman of the Murray Regional Algal Coordinating Committee, Richard Scott, today issued a red alert warning for blue green algae at Hume Dam.

“Routine sampling has detected very high cell counts at several sites within the storage,” said Mr Scott.

Albury City Council has been informed and the town water supply for the City of Albury is safe with Council treating the water with powder activated carbon.

“Under a red alert people are advised to avoid all contact with the untreated water for activites such as swimming or showering, and should ensure that any water used for cooking or drinking is from a treated supply,” he said

An alternate water supply should also be provided for stock.

Shell fish and yabbies should not be consumed from water under a red alert. Fin Fish must be gutted immediately and cleaned in potable water.

Blue Green algae are potentially toxic and may cause gastroenteritis, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting if consumed. Skin rashes and eye irritation can occur with significant contact. Cooking with contaminated water should be avoided and boiling or chlorination does not destroy algae toxins.
