COMMENT ON THE DRAFT TUMUT RIVER MANAGEMENT PLAN

Minister for Water, Nathan Rees today called for community input into the Draft Tumut River Management Plan, which outlines possible management strategies for the Tumut River for the next 10 years.

The Draft Plan will be on public display until Friday 6 June. It was prepared by the Department of Water and Energy in consultation with the Tumut River Advisory Committee.

The Iemma Government is committed to effectively managing the Tumut River for the long-term to deliver better environmental, economic and social outcomes.

The Tumut River is the lifeblood of the Tumut region, providing water for households, agriculture and industry, supporting community and recreational activities as well as drawing thousands of tourists to the region each year.

The NSW Government has already invested some $27 million in maintaining the health of this river in the face of severe drought and increased competition for water.

The Draft Tumut River Management Plan aims to build and improve on existing measures and introduce innovative strategies to better manage the Tumut River’s health.

The plan outlines possible directions and management for the River and incorporates enhancement of the river habitat, Aboriginal cultural heritage and alternative methods for the management of erosion within the river and anabranches.

Community feedback is important and all those with an interest in the long-term management and health of the Tumut River are encouraged to review the Draft Plan and make a submission.

The Draft Tumut River Management Plan can be viewed online at www.dwe.nsw.gov.au or at the Tumut DWE office in Fitzroy Street, the Tumut Shire Library or the Wagga Wagga City Council Library. Additional hard copies can be obtained from the Department’s Wagga Wagga Office.

The Department of Water and Energy is hosting a public information session on the Draft Tumut River Management Plan at the Tumut Golf Club at 7:00PM on Wednesday 30 April 2008.

Comments on the draft plan should be submitted in writing to DWE by Friday 6 June 2008.
