Media Release - Department of Water and Energy Date: 23 April 2008 BUILDING DAMAGE CAUSED BY TREE NECESSITATES REMOVAL Damage to the Department of Water and Energy office in Leeton caused by the close proximity of a large tree will see it removed in coming weeks.
The Department’s Manager Risk and Operations, Ian Charlton, said the large Blue Atlas Cedar in Chelmsford Place was the cause of ongoing damage to the building’s structure.
“The decision to remove such a large tree that has been here for many decades is not taken lightly,” said Mr Charlton.
“However; continuing water damage to the office’s roof and interior during rainfall caused by the constant shedding of needles from the tree, together with the potential for further structural damage from the root system, has left us with no choice.
“The tree has also previously been host to a large termite colony, which although has been treated, has weakened the integrity of the tree.”
Mr Charlton said the Department had discussed the matter with Leeton Shire Council staff.
“Once the tree is removed, the Department will replace it with a species more suited to the location,” Mr Charlton said.
