POTENTIAL BLUE GREEN ALGAE IN THE LOWER DARLING RIVER

A bloom has been identified in the lower Darling River at Burtundy, approximately 60 km upstream of Wentworth.

The suspect bloom was first detected on Tuesday the 24th of February and is present as clumps of green surface scum exhibiting an odour at some locations. Under the current temperature and flow conditions this bloom has the potential to spread downstream.

As a precaution all water users in the area should avoid all contact with this water until tests can be carried out to confirm its composition.

People should not drink, cook or bath with this water until further notice.

Pumps used to take water for stock should be placed well below the surface and pets, particularly dogs should be kept well away from the water.

Sampling will take place and results posted early next week.

If any health effects are experienced from contact with water affected by this bloom, medical advice should be promptly sought.
