How can I access information from SALIS?

SALIS data is available free of charge from the Soil Profile Attribute Data Environment (SPADE Pro) website where you can choose a particular area of NSW, click on one of the soil profile points displayed on the map, and then download a report on the landform and soil at that site.

There is a choice of three types of reports:

  • Soil essentials report: a summary of key soil and land characteristics at a chosen site, as well as basic laboratory test results
  • Soil profile report: a more comprehensive record of all soil and landscape features at a chosen site, as well as a complete listing of any laboratory test results
  • Soil technical report: a more detailed, structured report for technical users

To access more detailed information about a specific site from SALIS you will need to first provide the SALIS team with at least the following basic information:

  • The map sheet and grid references of your site. Australian Map Grid (AMG), Geodetic Datum of Australia (GDA) or latitude/longitude coordinates can be used. What sort of information and level of detail you would like to retrieve from SALIS. For example, are you interested in the general information about the soil on your land, or more specific information such as the topsoil pH?

The SALIS team can then help you to decide what type of information and products will best suit your needs. SALIS products

We can provide SALIS users with a range of standard or customised products based on the information in the database. These include tables, charts, graphs, detailed reports, spreadsheets and maps. They can be supplied in either hard copy or electronically.

SALIS training

The Department of Natural Resources conducts training courses in the use of both SALIS and the Soil Data Cards. The SALIS team, can provide more information.
