An introduction to vegetation management
In April 2007, the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW assumed responsibility for the programs outlined in this section of the site.
In 2005, the NSW Government introduced new laws to end broadscale land clearing across the state. The department is the government agency charged with ensuring our native vegetation is protected for future generations.
The department supports the 13 Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) in the preparation of Property Vegetation Plans (PVPs), which set out how landholders will manage their native vegetation over 15 years. The department's compliance unit is responsible for monitoring land clearing activity across the state, and ensuring that action is taken against serious cases of illegal clearing.
The department is also the regulatory authority in NSW for the plantation and private native forestry sectors. It is committed to developing a sustainable, profitable timber industry, one which can provide jobs and security for our regional communities.
