Water Licensing of Hunter Water Corporation
Hunter Water Corporation (HWC) provides water and wastewater services to the Lower Hunter. In addition, HWC has infrastructure in place to provide treated water to the Gosford Wyong Water Supply Authority's reticulated water supply system. HWC draws surface water from the Williams River catchment and Grahamstown Dam, and groundwater from the Tomago and Tomaree aquifers. HWC has monitoring and extraction bores in Tomago and Tomaree, and monitoring bores in the North Stockton area of the Stockton aquifer.
HWC was issued a Part 9 Water Management Licence under the Water Act 1912 on the 26 December 1998. A major review of HWC's licence occurred in 2003 which included the key outcome of three new supplementary studies to address strategic licensing needs in relation to the objects of the Water Management Act 2000.
The Water Sharing Plan for the Tomago–Tomaree–Stockton Groundwater Sources commenced on 1 July 2004, requiring conversion of HWC's licences to take water from these aquifers. This resulted in a Part 9 Water Management Licence under the Water Act for the Williams River and water access licences plus a combined works and use approval under the Water Management Act for the Tomago and Tomaree aquifers.
