Water Licensing of Macquarie Generation

Macquarie Generation owns and operates two coal–fired thermal power stations (Bayswater and Liddell) which supply approximately 40% of the State's energy requirements.

Macquarie Generation was issued a Part 9 Water Management Licence under the Water Act 1912 on the 11 December 2000 to take water directly from the Hunter River catchment and from the Barnard River, a tributary of the Manning River, via the Barnard Scheme. In addition, the licence enables Macquarie Generation to supply water to other water users.

The water sharing plan for the Hunter Regulated River commenced on 1 July 2004, requiring conversion of Macquarie Generation's licence to take water from this river. This resulted in a Part 9 Water Management Licence under the Water Act 1912 for the Hunter unregulated water and Barnard water, and four water access licences (Major Utility Specific Purpose, High Security, General Security and Supplementary Water) and a Combined Works and Use Approval under the Water Management Act 2000 for the Hunter Regulated River.
