Introduction

While there are close to 200 different species of reptiles in NSW, only six or so could be said to truly depend on wetland habitats. There are some reptiles such as the Eastern Snake-necked Tortoise, whose bulk numbers occur in wetlands. However, none are completely confined to wetlands. Many reptiles rely in some way or at some time on wetlands to carry out their life processes. Many occupy the margins of wetlands, where they have access to a vast array of food items. For example, wetlands offer a banquet for frog eating snakes such as the Red-bellied Black Snake and the Tiger Snake. Despite these few examples, only rarely is their abundance and distribution directly the result of the wetland ecosystem. (Cogger, 1983)

Threatened Species

None of the most common reptiles encountered in wetlands are considered Endangered or Vulnerable under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995.

For further information on the status and management of these reptiles, please contact the NPWS of NSW or visit their website.
